JOB SEARCH HELP – OCT. 2012 EVENTS

Several educational events are taking place in October at various library branches to help Fort Bend area job seekers. Some programs require advance registration where noted below:

Missouri City Branch Library Series:

Fort Bend County Libraries’ Missouri City Branch Library, 1530 Texas Parkway, will present a series of free Job-Search Assistance programs in October. All programs will take place from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm, in the Meeting Room of the library. The schedule of programs is as follows:

October 4 – Resumés: How to Make Them Sing! Presented by Carolyn Davis, Houston Community College

October 11 – Creating a Resumé and Completing the Application. Presented by Texas Workforce Solutions

October 18 – Creating References, Cover Letters and Thank You Letters. Presented by Texas Workforce Solutions

October 25 – Interviewing Techniques. Presented by Texas Workforce Solutions

Get Help Formatting a Resume at Bob Lutts Fulshear / Simonton Branch Library:

Individuals who are interested in improving their resumés can get hands-on help at a special “Resumé-Formatting Workshop” at Fort Bend County Libraries’ Bob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Branch Library on Wednesday, October 10, beginning at 10:15 am, in the Meeting Room of the library, located at 8100 FM 359 South in Fulshear.

Library staff member Nick Lowe will assist individuals who want to improve their existing resumé. Lowe will demonstrate formatting options that will increase a resumé’s chances of catching the attention of a prospective employer. Those attending the class should bring a digital copy of their resumé saved in a Microsoft Word 2010-compatible format.

The workshop is free, but seating is limited and reservations are required. Job Search Survival Workshop at University Branch Library:

Have you been searching for a job and not having any luck? Maybe it’s time for a change in your game plan. Fort Bend County Libraries’ University Branch Library will present a free, three-part series of “Job-Search Survival Tips,” beginning on Monday, October 15, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm, in the Large Meeting Room of the library, located at 14010 University Blvd in Sugar Land, on the UH campus. The series will continue on October 16 and 18, at the same place and time. Different topics are discussed each night.

The sessions are free and open to the public. Registration is not required, and late arrivals are welcome. For more information, call the branch library at 281-633-5100 or the library’s Public Information Office at 281-341-2677.

Learn About Career and Resume Resources at Sienna Branch Library:

With the increasingly competitive job market, job seekers are looking for ways to gain an edge and improve their chances of landing the right job. Fort Bend County Libraries has a variety of free job-search resources and services that can help. Learn more about them when the Sienna Branch Library presents “Job-Search Resources @ the Library” on Wednesday, October 31, beginning at 10:00 am, in the Computer Lab of the library, located at 8411 Sienna Springs Blvd in Missouri City.

The Adult Services staff will show how to take advantage of the library’s online resources that can help job-hunters improve a resumé, research prospective employers and industries, prepare for employment tests, improve computer skills, and find the right job. The program is free and open to the public. Seating is limited, however, and reservations are required.
