Volunteer opportunities at Fort Bend Museum Association

In addition to the satisfaction that comes with contributing to the Fort Bend community, volunteering looks great on your resume! The Fort Bend County Museum Association has current volunteer opportunities:

Have you ever toured a historic home with a docent who was passionate about the home you were touring? Remember how the docent’s interest was so contagious you caught it, too? We want docents like that at our museum!

The Museum is seeking docents to lead tours of the Moore Home and the Long-Smith Cottage – not just for Candlelight each December but all year long! We will hold docent training for house tours starting in January. We will hold training during the week and on Saturday so that everyone has a chance to attend, and if the scheduled dates do not fit your schedule, call Claire, and she will give you private training!

House tours will be scheduled for every day we are open – one tour in the morning and one in the afternoon for walk-ins. We will post a schedule each month. You may want to sign up on a regular basis – one morning or afternoon or day per week or per month. Or maybe you will want to give tours to senior groups that sign up in advance. You might want to recruit a friend to give tours with you – so bring her or him along and get started right away!

House Tours training:
Thursday, January 17th from 10 am to noon
Saturday, January 19th from 10 am to noon
Volunteer luncheon/get together:
Tuesday, January 15th 11:30-1 pm

We are also recruiting school program volunteers. We are holding a training day and luncheon to train new volunteers, retrain and cross-train experienced volunteers and get to know each other a little better. The schedule for these sessions is:

Volunteer training for school programs:
Tuesday, January 15th at the museum
Training from 9:30 – 11:30
Volunteer luncheon/get together:
Tuesday, January 15th 11:30 – 1pm

RSVP for the trainings and/or the luncheon by calling Claire Rogers at (281)342-6478 or emailing her at crogers@fortbendmuseum.org. All training sessions and luncheon will be held at the Fort Bend County Museum, 500 Houston Street, Richmond.

We have one more docent training opportunity: Spinner Training to learn how to use a spinning wheel and loom for the textile programs. We will provide all materials and equipment. Claire will teach the class with able assistance from Barbara Neeper. The details for these sessions are:
• Tuesdays in January and February from 1pm to 3pm
in the upstairs textile rooms in the Moore Home
• Starting on January 22nd and continuing until February 19th
Spinners’ luncheon to follow on Tuesday, February 26th

The Museum has one final volunteer opportunity: Jessica Avery, the Education Coordinator at the museum, will be gathering interested high school and junior high students to form a Junior Docent Society. Their first meeting is scheduled for Saturday, February 2nd. If you have a child or grandchild or neighbor who might be interested in this program, please have them call Jessica at 281-342-6478 or email her at javery@fortbendmuseum.org
