Learn About Resources for Job Hunters Jan. 10 & 17.
Are you looking for a job or considering a career change? You can pound the pavement with all the other job-hunters, or you can begin your search with a little preliminary legwork at the library.
Fort Bend County Libraries offers a variety of resources for job-hunters. In January, the University Branch Library in Sugar Land will present two workshops that will provide assistance on everything from creating a fantastic resumé to accessing area job lists.
On Wednesday, January 10, the Adult Services staff will demonstrate how to use the library’s “Job & Career Accelerator” online resource. The demonstration will take place at 2:00 pm, in the Computer Lab; seating is limited and reservations are required.
This easy-to-use online resource helps job-hunters create professional resumés and cover letters, get detailed and current information on a variety of occupations, match personal interests and skills with a desired career, improve interviewing skills, and much more. The resource includes a database with detailed information on more than 1,000 different occupations, and matches interests and skills with possible careers. It also provides more than five million up-to-the-minute local and national job postings.
The Job & Career Accelerator resource can be accessed remotely at any time of the day or night from a home computer with an Internet connection. A library card barcode number is required to use this resource outside of the library.
On Wednesday, January 17, the library will have a “Resume-Writing Workshop” beginning at 6:30 pm, in Meeting Room 1 of the library. Reservations are NOT required for this program.
Priyanka Raut and Ayo Ogunye, career counselors from the University of Houston Sugar Land, will talk about the different types of resumés, the sections to include on a resumé, the different between a resumé and a curriculum vitae (CV), and how to develop an effective resumé. They will also provide tips on how to market oneself with a resumé that reflects one’s experience and achievements, whether one is a recent college graduate re-entering the workforce or is in the process of a career transition.
The programs are free and open to the public.
