Job Search Survival Workshop March 17 & 18, 2020

LEARN JOB-SEARCH SURVIVAL TIPS AT FIRST COLONY BRANCH LIBRARY

 Have you been searching for a job and not having any luck? Maybe it’s time for a change in your game plan. Fort Bend County Libraries’ First Colony Branch Library will present a free, two-part series of “Job-Search Survival Tips,” beginning on Tuesday, March 17, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm, in the Meeting Room of the library, located at 2121 Austin Parkway in Sugar Land. The series will continue on Wednesday, March 18, at the same place and time. Different topics are discussed each night.

The two-part series is designed to help all job-hunters, from those applicants applying for a position at a fast-food restaurant to executives looking for a position in a large company. The tips that are presented can help any applicant plan a more efficient job hunt and make a more favorable impression.

Learn tips on writing a better resumé, researching prospective employers, interviewing and non-verbal skills, making a great first impression, networking, and much more. By developing an organized plan of action, the applicant is able to experience a more efficient job hunt with an increased chance of success.

In the series, a team of eight professionals, with decades of experience in corporate America between them, will share their insight and the experiences they themselves have had in the business world – from the perspective of the employer doing the hiring as well as the employee looking for a job. The job-search survival team includes business owners and a mixture of retired and working professionals – all of whom volunteer their time for this workshop.

The sessions are free and open to the public. Registration is not required, and late arrivals are welcome. Job Search Assistance at Library, March 2020

GET JOB-SEARCH ASSISTANCE AT MISSOURI CITY BRANCH LIBRARY SERIES

 Fort Bend County Libraries’ Missouri City Branch Library will present a 4-week series of free Job-Search Assistance programs in March. Omar Martinez, Regional Facilitator with Texas Workforce Solutions, will offer tips on a variety of topics for job-hunters. All programs will take place from 1:00 to 3:00 pm, in the Meeting Room of the library, located at 1530 Texas Parkway.

The schedule of programs is as follows:

·       March 4 – A Targeted Plan. Review labor-market information and assess needs and employment skills to create a targeted job-search plan.

·       March 11 – Job-Readiness Toolkit. Evaluate and practice effective communication in applications, resumés, basic introductions, and interviews.

·       March 18 – Sharpening Your Interview Skills. Prepare answers to common interview questions. Consider the employer’s perspective when choosing interview attire.

·       March 25 – Closing the Deal. Discuss networking, using social media as a networking tool, and following up after an interview.

Resume Workshop March 23, 2020

GET HELP CREATING A RESUMÉ AT LIBRARY PROGRAM

Individuals creating a resumé for the first time or updating an existing one can get hands-on help at a special “Resumé Workshop” at Fort Bend County Libraries’ Cinco Ranch Branch Library on Monday, March 23, from 12:15 to 1:30 pm, in the Computer Lab of the library, located at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd in Katy.

Learn the basics of putting together a resumé. Those attending this informal program will receive one-one-one help formatting a resumé and will receive a template and description of the essential elements that they can take home with them.

For help in updating an existing resumé, please bring a copy to the class.

The workshop is free and open to the public. Seating is limited, however, and reservations are required. Career Counseling Workshop Feb. 17, 2020

CAREER-COUNSELING WORKSHOP AT MISSION BEND BRANCH LIBRARY

Fort Bend County Libraries’ Mission Bend Branch Library will have a 2-part “Career Counseling Workshop” on Monday and Tuesday, February 17 and 18, beginning at 6:00 pm, in the Meeting Room of the library, located at 8421 Addicks Clodine Road in northeast Fort Bend County.

Part I of the workshop will focus on “How to Write a Resumé to Land a New Role.” Leadership coach Kalim Saiyed will provide tips on how to properly structure a resumé to maximize one’s chances of securing an interview with a prospective employer.

Part II of the workshop will focus on “Interview Techniques & Salary Negotiations.” Saiyed will share tips on how to prepare for a job interview. Gain a better understanding of interview strategies, including how to respond to behavioral questions and what questions to ask the interviewer. Saiyed will also provide helpful advice for negotiating one’s salary.

Saiyed is a leadership coach and career consultant with the Kalsai Group, LLC. He is a certified John Maxwell team coach and a CoachRICE graduate.

Feb. 2020 Workshops for Job Seekers

WORKSHOPS FOR JOB-HUNTERS AT GEORGE MEMORIAL LIBRARY

 Are you looking for a job or considering a career change?  You can pound the pavement with all the other job-hunters, or you can begin your search with a little preliminary legwork at the library.

In February, Fort Bend County Libraries’ George Memorial Library in Richmond will present two workshops that will provide assistance for job-hunters.

On Tuesday, February 11, the library will have a “Resume-Writing Workshop” from 2:00 to 3:00 pm, in the Computer Lab of the library. Learn the basics of putting together a resumé. Those attending this informal program will receive one-one-one help formatting a resumé. For assistance on a pre-existing resumé, please have a digital copy available on a USB flashdrive, saved to the cloud, or have access to it via email. Registration is required.

On Wednesday, February 12, a representative from Texas Workforce Solutions will present “Job-Search Seminar: A Targeted Plan” from 3:00 to 4:00 pm, in the Meeting Room of the library. A representative from Texas Workforce Solutions will talk about reviewing the labor market and assessing one’s needs and employment skills to create a targeted job-search plan.

College Fair Jan. 25, 2020

MISSOURI CITY BRANCH LIBRARY TO HOST COLLEGE FAIR

Students who would like to have more information on area colleges are invited to attend a College Fair at Fort Bend County Libraries’ Missouri City Branch Library on Saturday, January 25, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, in the Meeting Room of the library, located at 1530 Texas Parkway.

Representatives from colleges and universities will be on hand to share information about their programs with current high school students and their parents or guardians. Students will have the opportunity to learn about educational opportunities available at the colleges, as well as admission requirements, financial aid, student housing, and more.

Schools from Texas that will be represented include: Houston Community College, Our Lady of the Lake University – Houston, Texas A&M University, Texas Southern University, Texas State University, University of Houston – Main Campus, University of Houston – Victoria, University of Texas – Dallas, and University of Texas – San Antonio.

Schools outside of Texas that will be represented include Kansas State University.

Career Goals” at Fort Bend County Libraries’ University Branch Library on Wednesday, June 5, from 1:00 to 2:30 pm, in Meeting Room 2 of the library, located at 14010 University Blvd in Sugar Land, on the UH campus.

Cynthia S. Price, United Way Thrive Employment Coach with Family Houston, will provide tips on how to set and achieve career goals that are specific, measureable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound.
